Dog Days of Summer – Old-Fashioned Wisdom

Dog Days of Summer – Old-Fashioned Wisdom

There are certain phrases that stick in your memory, not because they were explained in great detail, but because they were mentioned often—usually at the dinner table or during a relaxing moment in the front porch swing.

“You shouldn’t be swimming during the Dog Days,” someone would say, or “You can’t plant that until the moon turns.”

As kids, we didn’t always understand—but we listened. And now, in mid-life, we sometimes find ourselves remembering those conversations and pondering their unexpected significance.

The Dog Days of Summer weren’t just about hot weather. They were a stretch of time filled with superstition, observation, and a quiet kind of wisdom that the old-timers lived by.

Today, with all our apps, forecasts, and electronic gadgets, it’s easy to forget how deeply our ancestors relied on nature—not just for survival, but for signs, guidance, and decision-making.

What Were the Dog Days, Really?

Technically speaking, the Dog Days run for 40 days from July 3 through August, when the Dog Star—Sirius—rises with the sun (meaning you can see the bright star in the early morning eastern sky).

To ancient peoples, this celestial alignment signaled the most ominous time of the year. But here in the hills of West Virginia, the star’s alignment wasn’t something we talked about.  Folks just seemed to know when Dog Days had arrived.  I wish I had asked more questions about it.

You may have heard people say things like:

  • “The beans won’t sprout right in Dog Days.”

  • “If you get a cut now, it’ll fester.”

  • “Don’t can during Dog Days or your jars won’t seal.”

Was it science? Maybe not always. But it was lived experience—and more often than not, they were right.

Almanacs, Moon Signs, and Gut Instincts

Ramon’s Calendar hanging on my kitchen wall

Before we had Google, we had the Farmer’s Almanac and Ramon’s Calendar. And these weren’t just for farmers.

That little almanac book sat next to the Bible in most homes.  Like the Bible, it was often consulted as a faithful guide to life. It told you the best days to plant vegetables, when to trim your hair for faster growth, and what the region could expect for year’s seasonal weather.

Even more than the almanac, folks trusted the moon. Our grandmothers planted by it. Our grandfathers harvested by it. The signs weren’t just tradition—they were trusted signs directly from God himself.

Genesis 1:14: And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years.

In mid-life, many of us are rediscovering those simple tools. We crave slower, more intentional living. And there’s something comforting about realizing the old ways—though sometimes brushed off as folklore—were deeply rooted in patience and natural observation.

“Don’t Swim in the Dog Days” — An Old Wives’ Tale?

How many times did you hear that growing up?  Maybe it was Grandma who warned you: “We mustn’t be a-swimmin’ during Dog Days”.  We wasn’t sure why that was so, but we listened…usually.

It sounds like superstition, but there may be more truth to it than we thought.

Dog Days often bring a perfect storm of conditions—warm stagnant water, rising bacteria levels, unpredictable storms, and tired bodies worn thin from the sweltering heat.

Even now, health officials often report higher rates of waterborne illness or drowning incidents during this stretch. The old-timers didn’t need a study to tell them that. They just knew—this isn’t the safest time to be cooling off in the river.

Remembering What Mattered

The Dog Days weren’t just something to get through—they were a reminder. A reminder to slow down. To respect nature’s rhythm. To listen to your body and to your elders. They gave us permission to do a little less, to take afternoon rests, to sip something cold and not feel guilty about it.

In today’s world, it feels like we’ve lost some of that instinct. But maybe that’s what mid-life is for. Maybe this is the season when we pause long enough to remember—and to revive what once guided us.

Passing It Down

As we raise grandkids or mentor younger women, we get to be the ones who say, “Back when I was little…” We get to keep the stories alive—not just for the sake of nostalgia, but because some of that old-fashioned wisdom still holds weight today.

Whether it’s flipping open the almanac before planting next year’s tomatoes or pausing before a late-summer swim, we honor our roots by remembering these things. And maybe, just maybe, we start trusting ourselves a little more—our intuition, our timing, and our connection to something wiser than us all.

So as the Dog Days fade and the air begins to cool down, may we take their lesson with us: to live slower, to listen more, and to lean into the old wisdom we had long forgotten…if we’ll just be still enough to hear it.

…and maybe I’ll take more time to pay attention to the Ramon’s Calendar hanging on my kitchen wall.  Heck, it even tells me when the best day is to go fishin’!
