This past week, I found myself watching butterflies in my flower garden. They fluttered from bloom to bloom with such ease and beauty, and I couldn’t help but pause. The sight reminded me of something I often forget: beauty takes time.
A butterfly doesn’t rush its transformation. Hidden away in its cocoon, it waits until just the right moment to emerge. If it came out too soon, its wings wouldn’t be strong enough to fly. And yet, when the time is right, the result is breathtaking.

When Prayers Don’t Go As We Planned
Recently, my daughter — a teacher — was transferred to a new school and grade level. We had prayed for her to be able to stay where she was. We prayed for stability, for coworkers she already knew, for comfort in familiar routines and environments. But despite our fervent prayers, the doors didn’t open the way we had hoped.
As a mom, this was difficult. It was hard to see God answer differently than I imagined. We want the very best for our children, and we pray with all the love in our hearts. But I was reminded that my prayers are not wasted, even when the outcome looks different than I imagined.
Much like the butterfly, I’m learning that sometimes God’s timing doesn’t match mine — and that’s not a bad thing. He sees the end result, the beauty that’s still being formed. God has a bigger view — and His plan often includes things we cannot yet see.
The Butterfly Teaches Us About God’s Timing
The butterfly teaches us patience and reminds us of three truths about waiting:
The waiting season is necessary. Transformation happens in hidden places before the beauty is revealed. Change often happens in secret.
The struggle is part of the process. Without the challenge of pushing out of the cocoon, the butterfly’s wings wouldn’t grow strong enough to fly.
The end result is worth the wait, and we mustn’t rush. What begins as a simple caterpillar becomes something stunning — but only in the right time.
In the same way, waiting seasons in mid-life — whether it’s an illness, a career transition, or watching our children step into new, unexpected paths — are God’s way of preparing us. The hidden work He is doing now will one day allow us (and our children) to soar in ways we never imagined. And we can rest assured God is planning something beautiful.
For Such a Time as This
Esther didn’t know her full purpose when she became queen. But in time, it became clear that God had placed her exactly where He wanted her:
“…And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14, NIV)
Just like us, Esther couldn’t see the full picture. Her situation looked uncertain, and even frightening. Yet God placed her exactly where she needed to be, at exactly the right time.
When I think about my daughter’s transfer, I trust that God has a reason. Maybe it’s for the students she will impact. Maybe it’s for the coworkers she will encourage. Or maybe it’s for her own growth as a teacher and as a Christian. Whatever the reason, God’s hand is steady, and His timing is perfect.
The same is true for us. If you’re facing a change in your own life, God’s timing is never late. His placement is never accidental. And His purpose always leads to something greater than we can see right now.
Encouragement for Mid-Life Women
Butterflies remind us that the end result will be beautiful, even if the waiting feels long. If you’re in a season of transition — an empty nest, an illness, a retirement shift, or praying for your children in ways you can’t control — remember this:
Your prayers are heard, even if the answer looks different than you imagined.
Your waiting is shaping something stronger in you.
The end result will reveal a beauty you couldn’t have created on your own.
When those prayers don’t unfold the way we expect, it can feel like God is silent. But like the butterfly hidden in its cocoon, God is at work. He is shaping us, strengthening us, and preparing us for what’s next.
